Allergies

Seasonal and environmental allergy symptoms, with what to take, at what dose, and for how long.

The short answer

Yes. Hugs clinicians treat allergies in children over video when it can be assessed safely on camera: tell allergies apart from a cold or sinus infection. A visit is a flat $75, any hour, in all 50 states and DC, with a prescription sent to your pharmacy when one is warranted. If your child needs to be seen in person, the clinician says so on the call.

What it is

Seasonal and environmental allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to pollen, dust mites, pet dander or mold. They usually show up from age two or three onward and often run in families. Unlike a cold, they aren't contagious and they tend to return at the same time each year.

What you might notice

  • Sneezing and a clear, runny nose
  • Stuffy nose and mouth breathing
  • Itchy, watery, red eyes
  • Itchy nose or throat, and a cough from post-nasal drip
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Symptoms that last weeks or return each season

What we can do on video

  • Tell allergies apart from a cold or sinus infection
  • Choose an age-appropriate antihistamine, nasal spray or eye drops and dose it by weight
  • Prescribe when over-the-counter options aren't enough
  • Build a plan to cut down exposure at home

Caring for them at home

  • Saline rinses or sprays for the nose
  • Shower and change clothes after outdoor play on high-pollen days
  • Windows closed on high-pollen days; wash bedding weekly in hot water
  • Keep pets out of the bedroom, and consider a HEPA filter

Be seen in person if…

  • Wheezing or trouble breathing
  • Swelling of the lips, face or tongue, or hives with vomiting after eating: call 911
  • Ear pain or fever, which may mean an infection
  • No improvement after two weeks of treatment
  • Snoring or disrupted sleep that keeps up, which may need an allergist
